What is gap filler?

Gap fillers are short phrases or words that you can use to speak fluently without being silent in your conversation. Filler words don’t really add any meaning to the sentence. For example, when you can’t think of a word, you might say “umm.”

English Gap Fillers

  • well

“Well” can be used before starting a sentence. You can use it to show that you’re thinking.”

Example:

Question: How was your presentation?

Answer: Well, it’s difficult to say. I think they liked our presentation. But I am not sure.

Question: Do you like chocolates?

Answer: Well, not really.

  • I mean

“I mean” is used to clarify or emphasize how you feel about something.

Example:

I mean, that would be amazing.

I mean, I don’t want to go there.

  • You know

“You know” is used when you are trying to think of what to say next or when you assume the listener already knows what you are talking about.

Example:

We’re looking for, you know, the lowest price.

You know,I never thought this would happen.
